How We Laser Engrave a Metal Wallet, From Design to Done

People at our booth ask us the same question almost every day: “How do you get the design on there?” The answer is a laser, a lot of careful setup and a little bit of art. Here is what happens between the moment you click Order Now and the moment your wallet ships.

Step 1: You pick the wallet and the design

It starts in our online builder. You choose a wallet color, then pick a design from our library of more than 70 engraving designs. You can also upload your own logo, artwork or drawing. If you want, you can add a name to engrave on the cash clip on the back for free.

The preview on the product page shows how your design will sit on the wallet, so you know what you are getting before you buy.

Step 2: We prepare the artwork

A laser doesn’t print color. It removes material. So every design has to be turned into clean black-and-white artwork that the laser can follow. For our library designs that work is already done and tested. For uploaded images we review each one, clean up stray pixels, adjust contrast and size it to fit the face of the wallet.

Artwork with lots of soft shading takes the most work. Bold shapes, silhouettes and clear lines engrave the cleanest.

Step 3: The wallet goes on the laser

Our wallets are made from anodized aluminum. Anodizing is a process that builds a hard, colored layer into the surface of the metal. When the laser passes over the wallet, it removes that thin colored layer exactly where the design is and reveals the bright aluminum underneath.

That is why the engraving on a colored wallet shows up as crisp white against the color, like a white elk on army green or a white mountain range on red. We position each wallet in a fixture so the design lands in the same place every time and stays clear of the screws.

Step 4: Check, clean and assemble

After engraving, every wallet gets a close look. We check for clean edges, even depth and correct placement, then wipe off any residue. If you added a name, the cash clip gets its own engraving pass.

Why laser engraving lasts

Because the design is cut into the surface rather than printed or stuck on, it won’t peel, fade or rub off in your pocket. Stickers wear off and printed designs scratch. A laser engraving is part of the wallet for its whole life.

Step 5: Ships within 48 hours

Most orders are engraved and on their way within 48 hours. Shipping is free on orders over $100, and if you are local you can choose pickup in Redmond.

What makes a good engraving design

Not every image works the same under a laser. The designs in our library were drawn with engraving in mind: strong outlines, balanced detail and shapes that stay crisp at wallet size. When a design has too many tiny lines packed together, they can blend into a gray blur. When it has too few, it can look empty on the face of the wallet.

That is why we test new designs on real wallets before they go into the library. We check how they look on dark colors like black and blue and on bright colors like orange and bright green, and we adjust the size so the artwork fills the wallet without crowding the screws or the thumb cutout.

Frequently asked questions

Can you engrave both sides? The front gets your design. The back has the cash clip, where we can engrave a name for free.

Will the engraving scratch off? It is very durable. The design is engraved into the metal itself, not a coating on top, so it holds up well to everyday carry.

Does engraving affect the RFID protection? No. The engraving removes only the thin colored surface layer, and the aluminum underneath still blocks RFID signals.
